Mittwoch Matinee: Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday, The Brancatelli Blog

Inter vestibulum et altare
plorabunt sacerdotes, ministri Domini,
et dicent:
R. Parce, Domine, parce populo tuo:
ne in aeternum irascaris nobis.
Miserere mei, Deus,
secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. (R.)
Peccavimus cum patribus nostris:
iniuste egimus, iniquitatem fecimus. (R.)
Secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum
dele iniquitatem meam.
R. Parce, Domine, populo tuo:
et ne des hereditatem tuam in perditionem.
Between the porch and the altar
the priests, the ministers of the Lord,
shall weep and say:
R. Spare, O Lord, spare Thy people:
and be not angry with us forever.
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to Thy great mercy. (R.)
We have sinned with our fathers:
we have acted unjustly, we have done wrong. (R.)
According to the multitude of Thy tender mercies,
blot out my iniquity.
R. Spare, O Lord, Thy people:
and give not Thy inheritance to perdition.

Editor’s note: This is the Menegali/Rossini translation as it appeared in devotional manuals (1930s-50s), blending the antiphon Parce Domine with excerpts from Psalms 50, 51, 105, 106, and Joel 2:17.
