I talk about how Flaubert’s Emma Bovary sought out the sensual aspects of religion and desire to help her through her despair. Both times were related to affairs, the second involving the scandalous “carriage ride of illicit desire” outside the cathedral in Rouen. Likewise, Richard Mercurius, “the Merk,” has an experience at Mass in which he can’t help but become excited at the thought of body, blood, and the girl of his dreams, Laura Fedora.
